Nikon history

The Nikon company was founded in 1917 with the name of “Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō Kabushikigaisha”. The three perhaps hardly understandable words means Japan Optical company. Nikon company is based in Tokio Japan. The company was founded with the joining of three separate companies. The Nikon company is part of the Mitsubishi group. The company has approximately 30,000 employees. The first Nikon camera was released in 1948, before the company manufacturing telescopes, lenses and other optical equipments. The first Slr camera (not a digital one) was released in 1959, the Nikon F. In the beginning Nikon makes lenses for Canon cameras as well. Canon later started to produces lenses as well. The first Nikon digital camera, the Nikon D1 was released in 1999.

Unlike Canon Nikon kept the same mount for digital cameras. All F-mount lenses can be used even newest digital cameras as well (but not at the same level see below).

Nikon 1 mirrorless camera lines

Nikon released the mirrorless camera line called Nikon 1. Unfortunately unlike Canon, Fuji, or Sony, Nikon cameras has a tiny 1″ sensor (13.2*8.8mm) which results significantly lower image quality than the competitors. On the other hand reach is significantly more with longer lenses. This cameras has a crop factor or 2.7x. The autofocus performance of this cameras are quite good. In one of the recent interviews Nikon says there is a possibility of bigger sensored Nikon mirrorless cameras in the future as well.
