Comment

Each colored lens name is a link, by clicking them you can read a review of the given lens. The rating is not based on measurement, but more on evaluation compare to other products, and practical usage value.

Basis of evaluation – optical quality

The evaluation is based on practical usage, not scientific measurements. To make a wide angle zoom lenses with zero distortion and falloff is quite a different thing than make a 50mm prime lens. A lens with a degree of 10 expected top-notch optically: excellent sharpness, contrast and colors. Some lenses has excellent resolution and poor contrast, and dull colors: in practical terms the contrast and nice colors are more important to create a beautiful image, than the very high resolution numbers. In reality all of them are important, and an excellent lens is expected to deliver in all departments.

Basis of evaluation – mechanical quality

This evaluations are mostly based upon how well the lens has built. What kind of materials used, how durable it seems, how the autofocus is operated. The manual focus lenses are not downgraded because of the lack of auto focusing system.

Basis of evaluation – price/performance

The price/performance evaluation is more to do with the price than the performance. I live in Hungary, here every lens is at least 50% more expensive than in the United States for example. Perhaps the lenses are even cheaper in Japan. So price is also relative, but many countries this is the most important factor to consider: something cheap in one country, very expensive in the other.

Other remarks

There is a difference between the copies for most lenses, so check the copy you want to buy in order to receive what you want. Sometimes one copy of the same lens is excellent the other one is poor.
