Comments

Canon 5ds / Canon 5ds R

-According to DXOmark measurements, the new Canon 5ds / 5ds R cameras has the widest dynamic range (12.4 EV) and best resolution as well among recent Canon Full frame models. The color depth is also the best. High iso performance is similar to the performance of the Canon 6d.

The Canon 5ds has slightly better High ISO performance and color depth according to Dxo. (Strange a little bit).

Dual pixel AF

-None of theses cameras has the new Dual pixel AF which is used in the Canon 70d and the new Canon 7d Mk II. Magic lantern manage to broaden the camera’s dynamic range of several Canon cameras by 3 stops using the Dual pixel system. It is rumored that the new Canon 1DX Mk II will have this wide dynamic range function based on the Dual pixel AF system.

Video

-More and more common 4k video only appear in the Canon 1DC, which is a similar camera as the Canon 1DX, just the software is different.

-In video seems Canon rather wants sell Cinema EOS, instead of making the video in the Dslrs better, but there is a solution, the Magic Lantern, which makes original video looking low quality, compared to the Magic Lantern enabled one.

-The Canon 1D Mk III had initial autofocus problems which reported to be repaired
-The Nikon d600 has dust/oil problems on the sensor, new Nikon d610 was released instead.

The tables shows Canon’s recent Full Frame Dsrl lineup in lots of detail (weight, dynamic range, dimension, colour depth, high iso capability, focus points, megapixel, price, etc). I put Nikon D600 as well as a comparison.

Canon 6d – Canon full frame Dslr comparison table

The most interesting for budget shoppers is the 6D. At around 1300 Eur can have almost the best picture quality Canon Dsrl ever. Newly designed sensor with 20,2 Mpixels, Smallest Full frame camera in the market. It’s weight similar as a normal Canon prosumer camera model as the 60D. Compare to Nikon there are some improvement needs, especially dynamic range is where Nikon has an advantage in later times. In short the Canon 6D seems a very good bargain. Shortcomings are the reduced focusing system compare to the 5d Mk III, with only one cross type points, eleven focus points in total.
Canon 6d detailed specification

The new flagship Camera is the Canon 1D x

with a price tag available only for very serious photographers or tycoons. Several years and this features perhaps going to be beat by a cheap Dsrl camera for the fraction of the price, I wouldn’t like the 1500g weight as well. For serious pro shooters perhaps pays back this high price in very short time.

Nikon comes very competitive with the Nikon d600 model they even put an in-built flash in the camera which is not usual in pro models.
The used Canon 5d Mk II can be also a very good bargain a very nice camera with excellent video capabilities. The new Canon 70d will also be interesting with it’s double pixel video focusing system.

Even the more old 5D can be a very good bargain with it’s good high iso capability compare to Aps-C cameras. It has an excellent image quality but perhaps not so much features, the worst perhaps the old LCD screen with 230,000 dots.
