Most important parameters – Compare cameras
Sensor size – compare cameras:

Cameras with at least a sensor size of 18*13mm has significantly better image quality than smaller sensored compact cameras. The bigger sensor usually has better image quality.

High iso performance – compare cameras:

usually this parameter shows the best of the cameras real quality. Perhaps this is the biggest difference between small sensored compact cameras and interchangeable lenses Dsrl and mirrorless cameras. Most compact cameras makes good quality pictures up to iso200 or 400. After for higher sensitivities the picture gets grainy and all kinds of red dots and other artifacts appear in the image. On the Other hand some Dslr cameras can have usable ISO of 102,400. Most Aps-C sensored cameras has better image quality at ISO 1600, than compact cameras at ISO 400. What is it good for? To makes pictures in lower light situations and freeze action with high shutter speeds.

Dynamic range – compare cameras:

Cameras not like human vision. Dark parts of the picture gets simply black without details, bright part will be “blown out” whites also with no details. We can choose either we make a lighter image with more detail in the lighter parts of the image, or we darken the picture and has more detail in the shadows but the bright parts will be blown out, but cannot have both. Dynamic range refers to the camera ability how much extent can a camera can retain details both in the dark and light areas. Cameras with high dynamic range is much more usable, because in summer usually dark and very bright is usually presented on the same picture if we make landscapes. But even for wildlife or macro the dynamic range is very important and determine our ability to make nice images.

Color depth – compare cameras:

Colour depth is refer to how many colors the camera can identify. Today most cameras can identify huge number of colours. The difference is not so huge like at low light ability or dynamic range for example.

Resolution – compare cameras:

Resolution shows how many detail the camera can capture. Basically all cameras of 6-36 Megapixel can be fine for HD size (1920*1080 pixel). The real difference of picture quality doesn’t depend on pixel count. If you want more reach a longer lens, or teleconverter is needed not a more megapixeled camera. In some cases the megapixel count can help, if you already own pin-sharp telephoto lenses and makes photos of distant objects, perhaps the bigger pixel count can help a little extent. Most cases I perfectly happy with the images my 8 Megapixel images my Canon 30d makes regarding resolution.

Compare cameras – Mirrorless cameras

Mirrorless Segment is very much developed recently. Olympus, Fuji, Sony makes interesting new sensors, and develop lots of lenses. Samsung and Pentax is also makes lots of mirrorless cameras. Canon and Nikon also has mirrorless models. Some cameras has Aps-C sensor size others are Micro 4/3 format(Olympus, Panasonic).

Compare cameras – Compact cameras

There is not much information about compact cameras at the moment, but I would suggest Panasonic Tz 40, Tz30 Or Canon Sx280,270 cameras for the best value cameras in compact land, as this travel zooms fit into the pocket, and has a very wide zoom range as well. In the superzoom segment several 1200mm full frame equivalent cameras expected for 2014 from Canon, Nikon, Samsung and perhaps from other manufacturers as well.
