Canon camera rumors

Canon only makes two mirrorless
cameras the Canon EOS M and M2,
and seems there will be more in
the near future. The EOS M has
Aps-C sensor, essentially the
same used in other Dslr models.
Until now C in not really fired
up about the Mirrorless market.

Canon history

Canon co has the biggest market share in photography in the World.
Canon company was founded in 1937 in Japan. First they only produce cameras, and uses Nikon lenses for their cameras. The first camera was developed between 1933-36, the first 35mm focal plane shutter camera in Japan. The Canon EOS digital system was started in 1987. Unfortunately they changed the mount, so older Canon FD lenses cannot be used on modern Dslr cameras. In the beginning there was an adapter to connect these older FD lenses with digital EOS cameras, but even that it was only possible with an adapter with a magnifying lens, which is an unnecessary optical element to reduce the quality of the lens. On the other hand all Nikkor lenses can be connected with modern Dslr Eos cameras, but up to know without autofocus function. Aperture is only can be adjusted with special adapters which are not cheap. Many older Nikkor has an aperture ring though. Some of them can be a good bargain if we are on a tight budget. What gives Canon a great success that they can produce faster autofocusing systems, when they started digital photography, than Nikon. This lead most photo reporters to buy their equipment instead of Nikon which was a market leader in film era. Even Robert Capa has a Nikon in his neck when he was photograph the war in Indokina.

The Ef lens mount

The Ef lens mount was created in 1987, it has the largest mount diameter among all camera systems (54mm internal). The flange focal distance of 44mm let’s to use adapters to use many lenses on Ef mount.

Camera lines

There are different camera lines in the system.
There are Full frame and Aps-c camera models.

Full frame models

C 1D line: 1Dx, 1Dc
C 5d line: 5d MkI, 5d Mk II, 5d Mk II
C 6d :

Aps-C models

d letter refers to digital
7d line: More Pro line: 7d and 7d Mk II solid build, complex fast and advanced Autofocus system, high frame rate, bigger viewfinder
70d line: Prosumer or midrange 10d,20d,30d,40d,50d,60d,60da,70d
700d line: Entry level cameras, small viewfinder, the latest cameras has flipout screen
100d: the World’ smallest Dslr, fixed sceen

Ef and Ef-s lenses

Ef lenses are compatible with Full frame and Aps-C cameras as well.
Ef-s lenses are only compatible with Aps-C cameras. Even cannot be attached because of the back plastic part of the lens. I see someone cutted it to use on Full frame cameras. Even so vignetting is expected, so must cut the outer parts of the frame. In the viewfinder also harder to compose the picture. Non Canon Aps-C lenses(Sigma, Tamron, Samuang etc) usually can be attached on full frame cameras, everything working, just don’t fill the frame. The EF lens line is the strongest in the world in my opinion. Compare to Nikon the mount is better, stronger, sturdier. Especially the super telephoto lenses are very high quality. Usually easier to find cheaper lenses in Canon than in Nikon line, or similar lenses are usually cheaper. There are lenses where the Nikon is better, for example cheaper Aps-C mid range zooms are cheaper (18-105,16-85), Nikon also has a 35mm f/1.8. In wide angle Nikon is better according to my opinion. What is good value in Canon is the 60mm macro, the new 10-18mm, the 85mmf/1.8, 100mm f/2, 200mm f/2.8, 300mm f/4, 400mm f/5.6, which even doesn’t exist in Nikon line. The 40mm f/2.8 pancake and the newest 24mm f/2.8 pancake is also a very good lens.

Lens abbreviations

Ef – Full frame and Aps-C as well
EF-s – Only Aps-C
USM – ultrasonic motor in the lens
is – image stabilizer helps in low light for still subjects, not in moving subjects
Stm – stepping motor, silent, excellent for video
DO – diffractive optics, which let’s the lens to be smaller
Tilt-shift Special lenses for architecture and landscape photography, which lets to tilt or shift the lens separately, to be parallel with the focus plane.

What about “L” lenses ?

Canon has an idea to make “L” lenses. L means luxury. These lenses are designed for the Pro photographers or anyone who can afford. Many people especially in countries with lower economical conditions hate the price of these lenses. Many companies like Canon wants to sell luxury products with significantly higher margin. I can tell many examples of this lenses, if I am in the critical side, I can ask how a small piece of metal and some glass can worth several thousand dollars? Huge amount of money needed for innovation, and the people work for Canon also needs money to take care their family. This doesn’t necessary means you need to buy the most expensive lenses. Let’s speak a little bit about details.

Price

Many especially newer optics are way overpriced. I only suggest to wait a bit and seach in the used market. There are very good bargains available for example the 70-200 f/4 or the 200mm f/2.8 to name a few.

Ultrasonic focusing

According to my perception Canon’s USM auto focusing system is the best in the World bar none. Canon’s system is quicker, more precise and more durable than any other systems I know. Not all the ultrasonic lenses has the same speed. Some of them are very speedy others are quite slow, so it does not guarantee that you have a quick focus. The speediest are in the bright prime lenses like 135L 200L 300L 400L and other longer primes. The 50mm f/1.4 and the 70-300 is USM ( non L ) is an exception with their micromotor USM, while most other has a real ring type ultrasonic focusing.

Build quality

The Canon “L” primes has excellent build quality, extreme durability. This features are proved by the time, unlike newer systems, which is uncertain how much time is possible to use. The Canon zooms, or some of them is a different story, not all “L” optics is at same level regarding build quality. Actually many newer Sigma lenses has much better build quality than older Canon zooms.

Optics

Many Canon “L” has stellar optics, but this doesn’t mean there are no better lenses out there.

Aps-C Ef-s lenses

No “L” has been released for Aps-C cameras yet. This is mostly because of marketing reasons to push people towards Full frame. Many Ef-s lenses has exceptional quality, better than many “L”-s out there, just think about the 17-55 is or 60mm Macro lenses.

I like the “L” idea, because you get a better, more usable lens, with quick autofocus operation, durable construction, and usually high optical performance without CA or other aberrations.

Cinema EOS

The 5d Mk II was an incredible success among filmmakers. The 21 Megapixel Full frame sensor let’s to make incredible picture quality, compare to other mostly smaller sensored camcorders. In the beginning the video function was an afterthought in the Full frame camera. The Cinema EOS started in late 2011 with the EOS C-300 and later followed by the EOS C-500. The EOS C-300 is a motion video camera with a mirrorless design and a super 35 sensor (1.5x crop factor). The newer EOS C-500 can produce uncompressed Raw format 4K video. The EOS C-500 has a 8.8 Megapixel Super 35mm format sensor. With it’s 20,000 USD price there is no threat to find it on the shelves of every houses. The smaller EOS C-100 sells for 5,000 USD (body only), the EOS C-300 sells for 12,000 USD. Currently these cameras are available with the new Dual-pixel CMOS technology as well. The special lenses used in this system has a CN-E designation.
Lenses:

CN-E14mm T3.1 L F (2013)
CN-E 24mm T1.5 L F (2011)
CN-E 50mm T1.3 L F (2011)
CN-E 85mm T1.3 L F (2011)
CN-E135mm T2.2 L F (2013)

Recommended lenses for Aps-C

What is good value in longer term is the lenses. The lenses with exceptional value in the system are the 135L, 200L, 300 f4L, 400 f5.6L, 60 and 100mm Macro, the 70-200m zoom lenses, all of them. The finest lenses are the longer primes, which are usually very expensives, the newer 200-400mm zoom with the built-in-teleconverter.

Recommended cameras

I wouldn’t recommend to buy the most expensive camera. It saves you lots of money, and you can have the same camera one or two year later for half cost. I consider you are an amateur, if you live from photography you have not much choice if your clients sticks to latest products.
