Most of them are long, very expensive prime lenses, with very precise ultrasonic motor focusing system, and stabilizer. Not everybody is a bird/wildlife shooter/ or millionaire though. The USM autofocus drive makes the lenses superior in precision and usage comfort. The image stabilizer makes the lenses much more usable in low light situations or with a long focal length.

Very good lenses with less budget, for an average people perhaps needs a wide angle and a telephoto, or a 15 85 lens:
