Canon 100 D review

The goal of this Camera

The camera‘s main feature is the small size and little weight, while keeping the Dsrl construction. The Canon 100D is a smallest Dsrl fabricated ever. I prefer DSRL’s over mirrorless cameras. It is true that usual professional and prosumer cameras feels like a brick in the bag. The idea to have smaller cameras is a good goal. Many people would prefer smaller FullFrame cameras as well. In picture quality/sensor department perhaps nothing really new since the Canon 550d, but seems Canon changed a bit, see below. The Canon 100 D sensor is not the same as the other Rebels. Seems they very much beleive in this 18 Mpixel sensor, in paper it is more than enough.

Canon 100 d vs Sony Nex or Micro 4/3

The question is that we prefer the Canon 100d or want Micro 4/3 or Sony Nex cameras. The goal is the smaller size and less weight, the possible third goal is to the Camera be pocketable with good picture quality.

Advantages of the Canon 100d over Panasonic, Olympus Sony Nex, or Fuji cameras:

– Reflex instead of LCD or electronic viewfinder
– Excellent Canon lenses with very good autofocus and other accessories
– Much more lenses available, possible better resale value of the good lenses
– Picture quality is better than Panasonic cameras
– Better for birding, sport or fast moving subjects
– Perhaps usage is more simple for Dsrl owners, menu more simple, excellent LCD touchscreen
– Mechanical shutter perhaps needs replacement
– Shutter is perhaps more noisy

Disadvantages of the Canon 100d compare to Micro 4/3 system or Sony Nex:

– Not pocketable, much bigger
– Big Canon mount lenses not help in size/weight department, pancake lens would be the ideal with 20mm focal length, but currently does not exist, only 40mm.
– Autofocus of Micro 4/3 or Sony Nex cameras not up to Canon’s Usm.
– Sony Nex, and Olympus newest cameras (E-P5) has better dynamic range, and on paper better image quality
– Perhaps the shutter is quieter in Non-reflex cameras

Advantages of the Canon 100d over other Rebels or traditional Dsrls:

– smaller size and weight much better portability

Disadvantages of the Canon 100d compare to other Dsrl cameras:

– perhaps not so comfortable grip
– weaker flash
– viewfinder is smaller and darker
– autofocus system is not so good as 700d’s
– with bigger lenses the camera can be front heavy, perhaps can get the lens instead
– No in camera HDR
– Battery life smaller

Seems apart from the smaller size, no real advantage of the Canon 100D compare to their bigger brothers.

Canon 100d vs Canon700d vs earlier Rebels

Seems the Canon 100D has a better low light performance than the previous Rebel cameras. The dynamic range is a little worse than the Canon 550d’s

Dynamic range: 11.3 EV vs 11.7 the 7d’s performance vs 11.5 Ev is 550d performance.

High iso performance: 843 vs 854 is the 7d performance vs 784 is the Canon 550d’s performance, which is better than the 600d ,650d and 700d’s performance.

Color depth: 21.8 bits vs 22 bits the 7d vs22.1 bits the 550d

Seems that the Canon 100D has a promising sensor, and a camera’s compact size is also very nice.

The flash of The Canon 100d is a little weaker than the Flash of the Canon 700d.
