Nikon d7200 vs d7100 differences

Nikon announced the new Nikon d7200. Let’s see what are the differences compare to the earlier model.

1. The new Nikon d7200 has a native ISO range of 100-25,600, while the older model only has an ISO range of 100-6400
2. The Nikon d7200 has an extended ISO range of 51,200-102,400 but only in Black and White mode. The Nikon d7100 can go up to 25,600. The interesting thing is how much can the new camera can be better than the earlier model in reality. I bet it will not be better with two full stops regarding high iso noise. Even 1 stop difference is huge for a DX camera.
3. The new camera autofocuses up to -3 Ev, while the Nikon d7100 up to -2 EV, this means half amount of light is enough for the new camera’s af system.
4. The buffer is app. three times bigger on the new Nikon d7200 camera. Now the the Nikon d7200 can record 18 14 bit NEF files, and app. 100 large jpg files, the Nikon d7100 can record 8-9 NEF files (5-6 in reality). For comparison the new Canon 7d II can record 31 Raw files, or 18 NEF+large jpg files.
5. New timelapse mode with exposure smoothing up to 9999 frames.
6. The new Nikon d7200 has in built Wifi and NFC. NFC is to control the camera from the smartphone. With a separately purchased device also possible to use wireless microphone from 50 meters.
7. Zebra pattern for video.
8. Uncompressed video output to an external recorder

Nikon d7200 vs d7100 similarities

Let’s see what are the similarities, which doesn’t changed.

1. Same size and weight. The new camera seems has the exact same size and weight as the parameters of the earlier model.
2. Same 6000 x 4000 pixel resolution. The new Nikon d7200 has a different sensor 24.2 megapixel, instead of 24.1 megapixel, but exactly the same picture resolution, regarding output. In real world I don’t expect significant improvement regarding resolution.
3. Same fixed screen. The new camera also has a fixed, 3.2″ LCD screen with 1340k dots in it.
4. Same battery, which is a good news, if you have spare batteries, you can use them as well on the new camera.
5. Same 51 / 15 autofocus system, which is there in many Nikon cameras. Both cameras has 51 af points and 15 cross-type focus points.
6. Same resolution and frame rate for video. 1920/1080 at a 60 fps framerate.
7. 1.3x crop mode, is in both cameras.
8. Both cameras has a center point which focuses up to f/8, which is very useful, for example with teleconverters.
9. Burst mode speed speed is the same 6 frames per second and 7 frames per second in crop mode but the new Nikon D7200 has a bigger buffer.

Nikon d7200 vs d7100 Is it worth to upgrade ?

It is the decision for everybody. The bigger buffer can be attractive to many people I think, the new video functions, better af also attractive. In basics it is very similar to the earlier Nikon d7100, but the real question how much better the camera in high iso settings ? If there is a significant improvement here, than the Dx camera can reach Full frame models noise performance.

Compare to other models

At first it seems a very strong camera. For sports / wildlife shooters the Canon 7d MK II more advanced focus system higher burst mode and more frames can be also tempting. The price of the Canon is 50% higher though. (1700 vs 1200 USD) For landscapes I think the Nikon is better. The dynamic range is better and I guess the noise level will better as well. In resolution I think won’t be any significant improvement compare to the d7100.
