Who need 50 Megapixels

Canon 5dsRumors can come true. Canon announced two 50.6 Megapixel Dslr cameras, the Canon 5ds and Canon 5ds R cameras. The difference between the two that the latter has no AA filter in front of the sensor. Rumors spoke about 50 Megapixel Canon cameras years ago, but I think there was no reality for this at that time.

Canon 5 DS and Canon 5DS R specs

After Nikon successfully releasing the Nikon D800/D800e/D810 cameras with high 36 Megapixel resolution. This Nikon cameras can produce stunning pictures, but only with super expensive, super sharp lenses.

The two new Canons has an ISO range of 100-6400, seems this cameras not designed for low light photography. For reference the Canon 5d Mk III has an ISO range of 100-25,600. This is a native range not an extended range. For reference the Nikon D800 has an ISO range of 100-6400, the newer Nikon D810 has an ISO range of 100-12,800.

50 Megapixel means almost 20 Megapixel on Aps-C ! How I get that number ? 50/1.6/1.6=19.53 If we consider that until now this was the max resolution in Canon Aps-C land, this is interesting. Now Canon announced two entry level Rebel cameras with 24 Megapixel. If I think that way it can be a Full frame Aps-C sensor. For this price (3700 USD) I think one can get the highest Canon sensor technology to date, but at this time it is not up to competition according to what we saw in cameras nowadays. But who knows ? Perhaps Canon made a camera which is better than the Nikon D810. The biggest competitor of the two new cameras is the in-house Canon 7d Mk II. This camera for 1700 USD has essentially the same but smaller sensor, plus better autofocusing system 65 all cross-type points, instead of 61/41, higher ISO range, Ef-s lens compatibility and dual-pixel live view focusing system. The Canon 5ds left for landscape shooters with FF frame lenses.

In the beginning was a speculation that the 50 megapixel Canons come with a Sony sensor with wider dynamic range, but according to newer announcement the sensor were made in house in Canon and with a similar dynamic range as other Canon cameras.

File sizes, 50Mp equals the resolution of 8688 x 5792, but there are other Raw formats as well 6480 x 4320 and 4320 x 2880 pixels.

Canon is very strong in high quality telephoto lenses, so it is interesting what these new cameras can produce as an output. This very high resolution can be a double-edged sword, if the lens is not sharp enough, the pictures can be ugly. The 50 megapixel equals huge files, storage and processing capacity, more prone to diffraction, and generate more noise. Apart from marketing reasons I see little benefit of this super high resolution. For huge prints, telephoto applications can be this resolution useful.

But the most interesting question which quality level will be available for this new Canon cameras ? I am sure many shooter would like film-like resolution and picture quality with the best lenses.

Spring has started

Seems the spring has started. Very nice after the long mild winter is warming to see the lights of the sun, feel the sent of the flowers, see the green vegetation. I see some arriving swallows and the black redstart is arrived back to our chimney. The Great crested grebes started their mating rituals. Quite friendly birds, no problem to make photographs of them, even without a hide.

I just sit calmly in their usual way and weight for them to arrive. I placed some nest boxes out in the garden, I will see if there will be some inhabitants in them. I try to place them the most calm uninterrupted parts of the garden. Unfortunately nowadays the Spring is short in Hungary, quickly turns to hot summer, when not so enjoyable taking photographs under the intense rays of the sun. The dawn and the dusk is remains for the nature lovers in relatively better conditions. I sit in a hide to make photographs of Bee eaters last summer it was quite hot.
