As perhaps you read on many websites including mine there were a high demand for a new Nikon d400 camera. The 4 number is not very succesful in Japan as far as I know because it is sounded as dead. I agree Nikon don’t want to give such a name for a camera, which was dead but now seems resurrected. The Nikon d500 is the winner name ! If I understand well this means the resurrection of the Nikon Pro Dx line, stopped/died at Nikon d300 and was like this ever since. A very wise move from Nikon, as many people wanted this camera.
What to expect ?
Higher grade, better build, bigger buffer, newer technologies, better af, beat Canon 7d II. These are my first thoughts about the Nikon d500. Nikon already has a very good sensor, which has wider dynamic range, beautiful colors, less noise than Canon counterparts. Where the Canon 7d II is ahead is the autofocus technology. Nikon soon will release the new Nikon d5 with a new 157 point af system which I guess will be in the Nikon d500 as well. Perhaps the similar name also reflects that.

autofocus system: Multi-CAM 20K Autofocus sensor with 153/99 AF points
ISO range of 100-51,200 expandable to Lo 1 and Hi 5 (50 – 1,640,000 equivalent)
Screen: 3.2″ 1.3k dots tilting touchscreen (this is not sure the tilt I saw on pics, the d5 has a touchsreen I guess the difference between the two just the sensor, the box, and the shutter, I guess similar inside )

Shoot cinematic 4K UHD video (3840*2160 I guess as in the Nikon d5)

Nikon d500 release date
As the information is offically available, I think the Nikon d500 will be released in 2016. Which part of the year is not yet known.
