Introduction

One of the most interesting groups of birds are the Owls. The Owls are usually hunts at night, but sometimes hunts at daytime as well. The following Owl species can be found in Hungary:

Long-eared owl Asio otus

This is the most common owl specie in Hungary. In winter at the East part of the country dozens of this owls gather in the smaller cities of Hungary in winter. At some places this owls are permanently appear, depends on people tolerate or not that the owls discharges their droppings on the ground. The Size of the Long eared owl is 25-37cm, wingspan is 90-100cm, weight of the bird is 220-370g. The owl has orange coloured eyes and visible ears. Mostly eats rodents. Non-migrating bird, permanent in Hungary. In winter some more owl arrive in Hungary from other countries. Like other Owl species like to spend the daytime in Pine trees. Usually hunts in open fields. In winter catches more birds, mostly sparrows.

Tawny owl or Brown owl Strix aluco

There are several pairs breeding even in Budapest. The size of the Tawny owl is 37-39cm has a wingspan of 81-96cm. The weight of the bird is 360-650g. If someone go too close to the nest this owl can be very aggressive. The Tawny owl prefers the forest habitat, usually nests in the holes of old trees. Eat mostly mouses.

Little owl Athene noctua

The Little Owl is a widely spread bird specie, quite common in Hungary as well. The Little Owl prefers open field habitat. Usually nests in Farms. The size of the little owl is 21-23cm, has a wingspan of 54-58cm, and a weight of 140-220g.

Boreal owl Aegolius funereus

The Boreal owl is extremely rare in Hungary. The size of the Boreal owl is 24-26cm and has a wingspan of 54-62 cm. The female bird is a little bigger. The weight of the bird is 100-190g. The Boreal owl lives in Forests where there are convenient nest possibility and small rodents.

Barn owl – Tyto alba

The barn owl is a beautiful bird. The Barn Owl prefers the temple towers in Hungary. The Barn owl flies without any noise because of their soft feathers. The size of the Barn owl is 30-35cm, it has a wingspan of 85-95cm, and the weight of 250-350g. Non migrating bird, mostly eats rodents, birds and sometimes amphibians as well.

Scops owl Otus scops

The Scops owl is a small migrating bird of Hungary. The size of the Scops owl is 19-21cm and has a wingspan of 54-64 cm. The female is bigger than the male. Before the Scops owl lived in areas covered with fruit trees, but now less and less of this areas exist. Fortunately accepts artificial wooden boxes quite well.

Short eared owl Asio flammeus

Unfortunately nowadays this owl is quite rare in Hungary. The Short eared owl mostly can be find in the Great Plain in Hungary.

Eurasian Pygmy owl Glaucidium passerinum

This is an extremely cute little Owl. Very small, only 16-17cm, with a wingspan of 34-36cm. It’s weight is 55-80g. The Eurasian Pygmy owl eats rodents, small birds and larger insects. Hunts in daytime as well.

Eurasian Eagle owl Bubo bubo

The biggest owl specie in Hungary. Quite rare. The Eagle owl can catch adult rabbit sized prey. The Eagle owl is approximately 60-70cm sized, and has a wingspan of approximately 160 cm. The female is bigger. The pairs stay together for a lifetime but only live together in the breeding season. If there is not enough prey for them they have not so much intention for breeding. Mostly they catch prey of 200g weight. They can catch other birds of prey like Buzzards, or mammals like fox, and small deers for example.

Ural owl Strix uralensis

The Ural owl looks like a big Tawny owl, it size is 50-60cm has a wingspan of 115-125cm and it’s weight is 500-1200g. The female is bigger. In Hungary mostly occur in the Northern Hills. Similarly to the Tawny owl is quite aggressive near it’s nest.
