Canon 70d vs Nikon d7200

Seems there is an interest about this topic. The Canon 70d is already a released camera, while the Nikon d7200 is an upcoming camera. Both cameras has Aps-C sized sensor.

To understand which camera serve your needs better, it must be understood for what kind of photography would you like to use the camera ?

General considerations – Canon 70d vs Nikon d7200

Both cameras offers an excellent package. Very good performance, andvanced functions, very good autofocus in a relatively small and affordable package. Even in absolute terms both cameras are excellent, and offers a very good value.

Sensors – Canon 70d vs Nikon d7200

The sensor or of the Nikon is significantly better, even the current 7100d sensor is significantly better than the sensor of the Canon 70d, even better than the sensor of the newest 7d Mk II.

What does it mean better ? Better in terms of high ISO performance and dynamic range. The difference is small and huge in the same time. If you not print big, mostly use the camera in good light, only check pictures on your laptop or mobile phone, the difference is not huge.

The difference is bigger in higher ISO speeds like ISO 800-6400, where the Nikon has significantly less noise (small grain). This higher ISO speeds needed if you often use long lenses for bird or sports photography or if you make lots of pictures inside the room, or dark conditions.

Dynamic range

The Nikon has significantly better dynamic range. What does it means? In landscapes the sky is not so easily burnt out, you get more detail in the shadow area. The dynamic range is most important in landscapes in bright light, when there is a big difference in light levels in the same picture. So if your main interest is landscapes I think the Nikon is clearly better. The Nikon is better at sky colors as well, as I see.

Other things to consider

If you main target is not landscapes, you can get quality lenses for the Canon more cheaply, than for Nikon and usually you have more lenses to choose from. On the other hand if you only want one walk around lens (18-105, 16-85 vr) Nikons are cheaper.

Video

Dslr cameras has a problem with video recording. Although the sensor is much better, than many other camcorders, autofocus is usually not works properly. Here the Canon 70d has two proper advantages: Dual pixel af, this is currently
the best Live view af system in the Dslr camera.

Another advantage is just supposed it is the flip-out sceen which the Canon 70d has, the Nikon d7100 hasn’t got.

We don’t know yet if the new Nikon d7200 will this flip-out screen or not (fixed). The flipout screen is very handy in video recording in recording extreme angles. Very useful in stills photography as well.

On the other hand the new Nikon d7200 offers 1920 x 1080 / 60 fps videos in 1.3x crop mode.

Wildlife

If you serious about wildlife Canon has a very good 400mm f/5.6 lens for 1300 dollars, Nikon only has a 300mm f/4 which is even more expensive and you need a 1.4x converter to get to 420mm. (300mm is usually not long enough for wildlife). Tamron has an interesting zoom 150-600mm for both system, but seems needs to wait a lot to have a copy. If you want to pay even more for superb lenses (500mm f/4, 600mm f/4), Canons are usually considerably less expensive, than Nikons.

Bottom line:

Both cameras are very good, for landscapes or low light you perhaps better served by the Nikon, for wildlife or video it is perhaps better to go with the Canon. If you have many money for long Nikon telephoto lenses, the Nikon is better for wildlife as well.
