Introduction – Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 DI Vc USD (Model A012)

New Tamron lens coming for Photokina. Seems Tamron makes better and better lenses nowadays. The newest is the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 ultra wide angle for Full frame cameras.

The main competitors of this lens is the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 and the Canon 11-24mm f/4 lenses. Both of them much more expensive, see more info below.

Abbreviations meaning:

DI – Digital for Full frame cameras (Di-II is the Aps-C or Dx)

Vc – vibration compensation or stabilizer, usually more effective on longer lenses

f/2.8 – lens brightness, the f/2.8 is quite bright, which is useful in darker situations

USD – Tamron’s ultrasonic autofocus motor

Features

The new lens has an ultrasonic af and a stabilizer as well, which most rivals lacks. The lens has fluorine coatings as well to prevent fingerprints (BBAR and eBAR coatings). The weight of the lens is little more than 1kg (1.1kg / 38.5 oz), like the weight Nikon 14-24mm, which is exactly 1kg. The minimal focus distance is app 1 foot (0.28m).

Optical performance

We don’t reviewed the lens yet, but according to early reviews (for example on photographylife) it is a very good lens. On Canon mount the new Canon 11-24mm costs 2.5 more (3000 USD), the good old Nikon 14-24mm without stabilizer costs also almost double (2000 USD).
