Sony cameras 2014
Introduction – Sony cameras 2014
Sony cameras formerly called Sony Nex now Sony calls alpha, for example the newest Sony a6000 is a predecessor of the former Sony Nex6, the new Sony a5000 is a predecessor of the Sony Nex 5. The alpha moniker can be confusing because the new cameras has Sony “E” mounts as former NEX cameras not Sony a or Alpha mount. Sony is very zealous in producin cameras and I thought to put together the below tables to help understand the differences and similarities of the different Sony products. There are two tables: the first is Aps-C and smaller sensored cameras, including several compacts, the below table contains the Full frame mirror-less models.
Sony mirrorless or Dslr
Some Sony cameras has SLT moniker in the name which refers to a mirror, and some webpage like dpreview and other refers to Sony cameras as “Dslr“. Dslr means Digital single lens reflex (camera), where reflex refers to a mirror. In that meaning this SLT cameras has a mirror, but it is not function like in “normal” Dslr cameras, where the mirror leads the light to our eyes. The Sony camera mirror only reflect some light to the autofocus sensors at the bottom part of the camera, but the viewfinder is electronic like in bridge cameras. So current Sony cameras are not Dslr cameras in the traditional meaning of the category. This doesn’t means this cameras worse, but if you want optical viewfinder it is not there, and the electronic finder is sucks energy like the LCD panel. On the other hand you can look back images on the viewfinder and perhaps can see more information there as well. In terms of sensor quality and features Sony cameras among the best cameras available on the market. Sony also makes very interesting Full frame cameras in small bodies, which no one else offers in the market today.

Sony RX1 and Sony RX1R
These cameras are Full frame compact cameras with fixed lenses(you cannot remove or change), Carl Zeiss Sonnar T 35mm f/2 lens, this is a fixed focal prime lens you cannot zoom with but very good quality and reasonable bright as well, no problem with sensor cleaning as well. The difference between the two cameras that there is no AA filter in front of the Sony RX1R sensor, the Sony Rx1 has AA filter. The Sony RXR without AA or low pass filter is sharper if you after quality and you shoot in Raw. In jpg the difference is not so visible.
Sony a7R
The Sony a7R has the best overall performance camera, the 36Mp sensor is perhaps almost identical than the sensor in the Nikon d800.

Sony a99
The Sony a99 seems little behind compare to the rest of the team in terms of high iso performance. The Sony a99 reported for very good video performance.
Sony a7s
The Sony a7s is the newest model there is no information about the performance yet. The 12 Mp sensor and 409,600 ISO shows it is designed for low light situations.

Explanation about the items in the tables
ISO – Sony cameras 2014
ISO is refers to the camera ability to make clean noise-free images in low light or make high shutter speed images with small apertures in good light.
High iso
It refers to up to ? iso number makes the camera good images. This numberS are based on Dxo laboratory measurements.
Dynamic range – Sony cameras 2014
Today modern digital cameras cannot makes images as we see them. Either we make images on dark part or bright parts, but if there are bright and dark parts of the image we must choose: we wants details in the dark areas and the bright areas will be burnt out, or we want details in the bright areas, and the dark areas will be black without details. The dynamic range refers how many range of detail can a camera can handle. For example the scene has a 20 EV dynamic range, a camera with a 14 EV dynamic range shows more detail in the shadow or highlight areas than the camera with a 12 EV dynamic range. The best would be a camera with a 20 EV dynamic range this way the picture would look as it is, but this camera not exists yet. Best cameras has a 14-15 EV dynamic range today, if we make pictures in Raw format.
Color depth – Sony cameras 2014
Color depth refers to how many colors the camera can identify. This is very useful for example if we want to make pictures of flowers with different colors.
ISO range – Sony cameras 2014
The base ISO is usually ISO 100, with the same amount of light we can double the shutter speed at ISO 200, double again at ISO400, ISO 800, ISO 1600, ISO 3200 and so on. The iso range of 100-25,600 doesn’t mean at ISO 25,600 the camera produce acceptable clean images. Usually at the end of the ISO range the picture quality usually very low, the picture is very noisy, ugly looking. Full frame cameras produces usually good image quality up to ISO 6400 or little more, Aps-C cameras up to 3200 or little more.
