Sigma lenses for Canon EF mount

sigma

Lens notes

Art – new lens line at Sigma some very nice lenses here like the Sigma 35 1.4 Art , Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art or the Sigma 18-35 Art lenses.
Contemporary – Sigma consumer zoom lenses, it is a newer category
Sports – telephoto lenses for sport photography, the Sigma 120-300mm Sports for example
EX – the older lenses with higher quality according to Sigma, still appear many such lenses in the market

Cannot go blind after such abbreviations, some of these lenses very fine, the others are not, obviously the manufacturers try to use this to sell more, like Canon “L” for example, it is part of the marketing strategy, it needs to understand though if you buy a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX or Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens, the two lens is a completely different story.

DG – lenses for Full frame digital Slr cameras
DC – lenses for Aps-C digital Slr cameras
DN – lenses for Mirrorless cameras, or compact system cameras
Fisheye – lenses for very wide angle with extreme distortion

HSM – Hypersonic motor, similar to SWM in Nikon or USM in Canon
OS – optical stabilizer, which helps in still subjects, not for moving subjects, Canon calls is (image stabilizer), Nikon calls Vr (Vibration reduction), Tamron calls Vc (Vibration control), the same thing. The lens has sensors which detect movement or shake, vibration as you call it and with moving elements corrects it, this way we can use lower shutter speeds, than without the stabilizer handheld. On a tripod not needed, better to switch off.
APO – apochromatic lens, means no chromatic aberration or purple fringing, true APO lenses are really expensive using Fluorite lens elements, in a Sigma lens means better than the another Sigma lens without APO moniker.

LD (low dispersion) lens elements
SLD (special low dispersion) lens elements
FLD () low dispersion elements like Fluorite
SMC coating Super Multi coating layer on the lens against flare and unwanted reflexions

f/4.5-5.6 lens brightness, the smaller numbers are better, these shows brighter lenses, if only one number it is either a prime lens or the zoom lens has a constant aperture, up to two lens come to my mind, the Sigma 18-35mm and the Sigma 24-105mm f/4 lenses.
For example Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 lens. The first two number is the focal length, smaller number are wider, bigger number are longer lenses. Up to 24mm ultra wide lenses, 24-49mm wide angle lenses, 50mm normal lenses, up to 135 shorter telephoto, 200mm medium telephoto, 300-399mm long telephoto, 400-800mm super telephoto lenses. The first usually smaller number after the f/ or 1: is the brightness at wide angle, the second number is the brightness at long end. It means the brightest aperture, or wide open. For prime lenses only one number.

Other abbreviations

FOV: Field of view
MFD: Minimal focus distance

Lens name Compatible Filter size Weight Price (dollar/EUR) Comment
Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 fisheye Aps-C No filter possible 470g /1.03 lb 899 USD / EUR / HUF Interesting lens with 180 degree field of view, but for very limited purposes (one-two shots at wedding, inside a flat room shots, funny video), round image with all kinds of imperfections (distortion, vignetting, CA), huge price
Sigma 10mm f/2.8 fisheye Aps-C No filters 476g/ 1.05 lb. 599 USD / 549 EUR / 183,000 HUF Seems it a very nice lens
Sigma 8-16mm f/4-5.6 Aps-C No filters 555g / 1.22 lb 649 USD / 599 EUR / 195,000 HUF Quite a good lens, if you have a good copy, really wide angle, nice range, but dark, aiming at only for landscapes
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 review Aps-C 77 mm 520g / 1.14 lb. 399 USD / 365 EUR / 125,600 HUF A decent lens, but not stellar, the Canon 10-22 better against flare, the Tokina 11-16 is sharper and has better contrast
Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 Aps-C 82 mm 520g / 1.14 lb 649 USD / 494 EUR / 168,000 HUF It is improved over the earlier version
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Aps-C 62 mm 430g (15.2 oz) 499 USD / 489 EUR / 133,000 HUF Very popular lens thanks to it’s bright f/1.4 aperture, not the strongest in the corners
Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 A review Aps-C 72 mm 810g (28.57 oz.) 799 USD / 690 EUR / 215,000 HUF This is truly an exceptional lens. No other zoom lens available with f/1.8 max aperture. On top of that this lens is sharp wide open, which is very rare. It is not for beginners though, the relatively narrow range, is more usable for experienced photographers. The f/1.8 aperture is also creates shallow depth of field which is not so easy to treat.
Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 DC OS HSM Aps-C 77 mm 565g (19.9 oz.) 519 USD / 333 EUR / 114,000 HUF Quite good lens, no FTM, rotating focus ring
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM C (contemporary) Aps-C 72 mm 465g / 16.4 oz. 499 USD / 380 EUR / 140,000 HUF This lens has at least three versions, the newest are the best, but become expensive in the process
Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM APO Aps-C 67/77 mm 1.34 kg (47.26 oz.) only used USD / only used EUR / 260,000 HUF seems discontinued, there is a II version as well, autofocus problems such as front focusing are occuring
Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM II Aps-C 62 mm 490g (17.28 oz.) 379 USD / 218 EUR / 81,500 HUF A usual superzoom, not the best, aiming at beginners
Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 OS Aps-C 62mm 470g / 16.58 oz. 349 USD / 319 EUR / 125,000 HUF A usual superzoom
