kerlee 35mm f1.2

About Dzoptics

Perhaps few people heard about DZopics yet. The Shenzhen Donzheng co is in the optical industry for more than 10 years. They involved in multiple fields of optics like medical, military, lighting, security, laser and many more.

They prouduce scan lenses, large format lenses, CCTV lenses, tele centric lenses, focusing rings and adapters as well.

Seems the unique, bright 35mm is their first photographic lens though.

The lens has a stepless aperture, which can be regulated by a switch.

How Watkins saved Yosemite ?

how watkins saved yosemite
Charleton E Watkins was an early landscape photographer in the US. He visited the Californian area in 1861 with his middle format film camera. He took high resolution images on huge slides.

The pictures somehow found Abraham Lincoln the president of the United States at that time, who liked the pictures so much that he gave the area a protection by law. Later the Yosemite became the second National Park in the US in 1890.

This was the first case when photography changed the history according to Matthew Butson the Vice president the Archives of Getty images.

New Zenith lenses

zenith lenses coming
On the picture is a very old Zenith camera

Which Zenith lenses are coming ?

Seems Zenit comes back with three lenses, the Zenith 85mm f/1.2 the Zenith 50mm f/1.2 and the Zenith 50mm f/0.95 lenses. Zenith had some very popular lenses like the Jupiter 135mm f/2.8 is still used in Hungary by some or the Zenitar 16mm fisheye lens which was available in the US as well, and had a good reputation.

New Zenitar 50/0.95

This lens is designed for Sony FE mount cameras. Has many aperture blades, 14 if I remember well, in two different depths. The lens has a 72mm filter thread, the lens construction is 9 elements in 8 groups.

New Zenitar 50/1.2

This lens is designed for Full frame cameras. It will be available for both Canon EF and Nikon F mounts. Perhaps this will be the first lens released sometime this year. Currently it is a massive 1200g lens, Zenith is working on to make it smaller.

New Zenitar 85/1.2

It is also designed for Full frame cameras, with a design of 9 elements in 7 groups, has a 82mm filter thread, and metal mount. It will be available for both Canon EF and Nikon F mounts.

Price and release date is not yet known of these lenses (some projected for 2017), but according to some information the lenses will not be more expensive than 600 USD.

If you good at Russian language you can read more about these lenses here at Denis Gavrilov website

Zeiss Batis 18mm f2.8 for FF Sony E mount

Zeiss Batis 18mm 2.8
Seems Zeiss actively take part of the Sony E mount lens construction. The widest lens is coming in the form of the Zeiss Batis 18mm f/2.8 lens. The wide 18mm focal length is very popular among landscape photographers.

The other lenses in this family is the Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2 and the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 lenses. The other two lenses look very interesting as well. The 85mm is for portraits, the 25mm is also for landscapes and general photography.

All three lenses has wide apertures which makes them more useful in low light or night photography.

These are all autofocusing lenses on the Sony E mount Full frame cameras (most Zeiss lenses are manual on other mounts, like Canon and Nikon).

Sony 70 300mm G OSS

(1450 EUR, Sony FE mount)
Sony 70 300 G OSS
A new telephoto lens from Sony is on its way. This is a tipical, very useful reach in photography, especially for portraits or distant landscapes. Most manufacturers uses these types of lenses as a step up (better than the cheapest, but not really satisfy an advanced amateur), but there are more serious versions as well. The problem with these lenses is the soft 300mm setting. Otherwise who would buy super expensive 300mm primes ? I found the 70 300mm focal length is quite useful, but yet to see a sharp 70-300mm at 300mm. The sharp aperture is another story. I would be interested in an ideal word how these lenses would look like.

I do not say that this Sony is like this. The steep price tag (1450 USD) suggests it is designed to be better. Perhaps it is sharp all the way, wide open. On product images the lens looks really reassuring not like the above mentioned plastic wonders. The lens has an Optical Steady shot stabilizer and sealed against dust and moisture. The lens has a focus hold button can be used to stop the autofocus system when it is required.

Sony 70 300mm f4.5 5.6 G OSS specs

Filter size: 72mm
Max Aperture: f/4.5
Min aperture: f/29
Aperture blades: 9

Lens weight: 885g (1.88 lbs.)
Dimensions: 84 x 143.5 mm

Sony 70 300mm f4.5 5.6 G OSS price

The initial price of the new lens will be 1450 USD.

Irix 15mm f2.4 Blackstone and Firefly lens

(695 and 495 EUR, Full frame, manual focus)
irix 15mm f2.4
This is the lightweight firefly version of the Irix lens

A new Swiss Korean optics is on the Horizont. The company name is TH Swiss, which seems manufacturing the manual focusing, full frame lens in Korea. That seems quite unusual. According to the specification it can be a very interesting lens. The filter size is 95mm, the lens has 15 elements in 11 groups, the minimum focus distance is 0.28mm (1′). “The photographers dream lens is built by engineers and perfected by designers”

There are to versions: a Firefly and the Blackstone. One of them is built like the Tank the other is the “Lightest in category”. The lens is optimized for 50+ megapixel sensors according to the manufacturer, has neutrínó coating, and clicks at infinity focus. The lens has a focus lock, which allows to fix the focus ring at any point, and the lens has sealing against dust and moisture.

The Firefly version of the lens has a broader focusing ring.

The manufacturer offers several own ND filters as well as a separate accessorie to the lens for extra money.

Irix 15mm f2.4 Blackstone and Firefly lens specification
Available mounts: Canon, Nikon, Pentax
Max aperture: f/2.4
Lens construction: 15 elements in 11 groups
Filter size: 95mm front and gelatine back filter as well
No of aperture blades: 9
Compatibility: Full frame
Focusing method: Manual
Weight: 685 (1.51 lbs.)/653g (1.44 lbs.) Canon / Nikon
Video about the Irix 15mm f2.4 Blackstone and Firefly lens

No price information yet, my guess it won’t be cheap. The blackstone version will be more expensive because of the alu construction. According to some sources the price will be 475 EUR for Firefly and 695 EUR for the Blackstone version.

Venus Laowa 15mm f/4 Macro

(479 USD, manual focus, true 1:1 macro)
This is a relatively new lens from 2015. It has two interesting functions: it is an ultra wide angle lens with true 1:1 macro functionality. Currently I don’t know any other lens with such specification. The macro ability add some depth of field capabilities to the ultra wide angle lens. The aperture has 14 blades which can be closed down to f/32.
venus laowa 15mm f4 macro
The lens takes 77mm filters and has 1 ED and 3 high reffractive lens elements. The minimum focusing distance is 0.12m (4.72″) which results in 1:1 true macro maginification. The lens is relatively compact and lightweight with it’s 410g (14.46 oz.) weight.

When used with Aps-C cameras +-6mm shift is possible to correct perspective.

[do_widget Text]

According to early reviews it is recommended if you want to use the true macro ability, otherwise as a wide angle there are better options. Do not think it will match with a tilt shift lens for architecture photography.

Venus optics laowa 15mm f4 macro

As I see it can make decent images but the corners are not as sharp as the center, it is still very interesting lens, as you can as close as the front element to the subject.

Nikon DL premium compacts

Nikon DL
The compact camera market is declining because of smartphones. Several manufacturers announced they only going to make premium compact cameras, because of this competition. It is an interesting move that Nikon announced the new DL line of compact cameras.

Nikon DL premium compacts the basics

This cameras has a 1″ sensor (13.2 x 8.8mm), most compact cameras has a 1/2.3″ sensor(app. 6x4mm). The bigger sensor is normally translates to better image quality, lower noise etc. The sensor is a 21 Megapixel BSI-CMOS sensor, with an ISO sensitivity of 100-12,800.

The optics are the following for these cameras:

24-85mm f/1.8-2.8 an ideal zoom for landscapes and general usage
16-50mm f/1.8-2.8 (this is an ultra wide angle)
24-500mm f/2.8-5.6 (super telephoto)

Just based on specification this looks quite impressive: brightness, reach, wide angle everything you can dream of.

Nikon DL 24-85mm

What is interesting the this camera offers 1:1 macro with manual focusing, which is rare in compact cameras. Optional viewfinder can be purchased for this camera for extra money. The camera has a 3″ tilting touch OLED monitor.

Nikon DL 16-50mm

This super wide angle camera has distortion correction, which corrects keystoning. (if we photograph a building from below the lines are not straigt but become closer and closer). Optional viewfinder can be purchased for this camera as well. This camera also has a 3″ tilting touch OLED monitor.

Nikon DL 24-500mm

Only this camera has an inbuilt viewfinder out of the three, but the price is higher as well. The viewfinder is an 2.359 million dots OLED screen. An optional external mic is also can be purchased to this camera which can record UHD videos. For this camera apart from the viewfinder there is a 3″ vari-angle OLED touch monitor.

Connectivity

All there cameras has Wifi and NFC compatibility with compatible systems. Nikon snapbridge application must be installed on the device. Out of the three the one with the big lens is the most interesting for me. This is what many wildlife/bird fans always wanted: a big sensored compact with a long lens. But the Nikon P900 is much more interesting regarding reach: 2000mm instead of 500mm. This is a huge difference. Other competition is the otherwise not so successful Nikon 1 line (with similar sized sensor) where you can attach Dslr lenses with bigger reach as well. A 300mm lens will be 810mm equivalent.

The super wide angle is also interesting and unprecedented in this compact segment. The widest angle offered in a compact was a 21mm equivalent if I remember well. It all comes on the lens, how good the lens will be, how control flare, which is usual problem with these types of lenses and things like that. If the lens will be very good a camera can be a hot seller.

Concurrence / competition

This segment is dominated by the Sony RX 100 line of cameras out of which the Mk IV is the latest, but the earlier ones has a great value as well. Apart from the little confusing/complicated menu system, which most Dslr users don’t like, these cameras offer the best quality in premium compacts.

Apart from compact cameras at this prices Dslr’s are the biggest competition, which are much better in terms of image quality but a good optics can cost a fortune, especially the long one.

Nikon DL price

The price of the Nikon DL camera with the 24-85mm lens is 650 USD, the one with the long 24-500mm lens is 1000 USD, the third one with the ultrawide angle lens is 850 USD.

Tamron Tap in console

Tamron Tap in console

Product name: TAMRON TAP-in Console (Model TAP-01)
Date of launch: March 24, 2016
Versions: there are separate versions for Canon and Nikon later Sony as well

What is this console good for ?

This console allows us to update firmware microadjust focus and many other functions as well, for example setup focus limiter (near and far limit) for some lenses, adjust vibration reduction, and customize other functions as well. This console in function is similar to Sigma’s USB dock, but of course for Tamron lenses. It seems as a system (the program of the consol will be updated as well) which helps to make many refinements in the future, without sending the lens to service centers.

How is it operates ?

The console can be operated from PC or Mac via the Tap-in utility program.

Compatible lenses

So far the following lenses are compatible with the Console: Tamron 35mm f/1.8 VC, Tamron 45mm f/1.8 VC, Tamron 90m f/1.8 Di VC USD (the newest version I think) and the Tamron 85mm f/1.8 di Vc USD. In the future there will be many more lenses.

Tamron Tap in console price

There is no information about the price of the console yet.

Speedy Hippo

Speedy hippo
Hippos perhaps mostly known to welter in the mud, not as speedy animals like cheetah or antelopes. On the other hand Hippo’s part of the big five in Africa and very dangerous animals. Check the video how fast the Hippo can swim in deep water, I was surprised to see that, how speedy that big animal is.
