What is the difference compare to Compact cameras ?

The main difference is the Dsrl cameras has a Mirror and viewfinder. With Compact cameras we compose a picture using the rear LCD panel. In case of Dsrl cameras we normally use the upper viewfinder to compose a picture and we look through the lens when we compose a picture. This means we see a normal picture, like how we see with our eyes, but in case of Compact or Milc cameras we see an electronic picture at the rear monitor. What is the difference ? Below picture shows the differences between the Milc and Dslr cameras. Milc cameras in short are like the Compact cameras the only difference is that these cameras has interchangeable lens mounts (can change lenses) and usually much bigger sensors, than compact cameras and this way better picture quality.

Milc vs dslr

The Difference between an electronic viewfinder and LCD are the following:
Short “lag” in case of electronic, in case of Reflex we see everything in time
In case of bright sunlight or shadow the Reflex camera are much more useful, LCD can be too bright or to dark, noisy, in both cases can happen we didn’t see properly and missed the shot.

For reflex cameras some basic photographic knowledge is preferred because Reflex cameras not so automatically makes good pictures like the compact cameras.

Newer Dsrl cameras has Live view mode which means that it is possible to use them like the Compact cameras composing the picture with the rear LCD. In this mode the autofocus function is usually slower.

Other differences are that the lenses can be attached to a Reflex camera and remove from the camera which makes possible to use multiple specialized lenses on the same camera.
Autofocus are usually much quicker and precise on Reflex cameras which makes them more capable to shoot sports, action, portrait, kids, or wildlife.

How to categorize Dsrl cameras ?

One method is we can identify Full Frame and Aps-C cameras. The difference between the two is the size of the sensor of the camera. The Full frame camera sensor size is usually 36*24mm like the film cameras in the past. The Aps-C cameras has smaller sensor size 22,5x15mm. Not all the cameras has the same size as mentioned earlier, sometimes little smaller, sometimes little bigger.

What is the difference between the Full frame and Dsrl cameras ?

The difference between the Full frame cameras and Aps-C cameras are the following:
1. Picture quality: Usually the bigger the sensor the better picture quality we get, because the bigger sensor has better light gathering capability.
2. Reach: This is little tricky to explain, but if we attach the same lens to a Full frame and Aps-C cameras, we have different field of view or reach. The Full frame camera has wider field of view because of their bigger sensor, the Aps-C cameras has narrower field of view because of their smaller sensor. The proportion of the focal length is the ratio of the sensor size: 36mm/22,5mm=1,6 in case of Canon cameras, 1,5 in case of Nikon.
This means in simple if we want more reach and wants to photograph distant things we prefer Aps-C cameras, if we want the possible widest setting we prefer Full frame cameras. This is way most landscape or building photographer uses Full frame cameras, most wildlife or bird photographer uses Aps-C cameras.

Lens compatibility ?

Usually not all lenses can be attached to every Digital camera. Some lenses are designed to Aps-C sensors, which allows them to be smaller, and are not compatible with Full frame cameras.

How much does a Dsrl camera costs ?

Today it is possible to buy used Dsrl cameras with relatively little money such as 2-300 dollars used. New Dsrl cameras can be bought approximately started from 400 dollars. Full frame cameras are usually much more expensive, starts around 1200 dollar used, 1900 dollars new.

What are the main manufacturers ?

The two biggest manufacturers are Canon and Nikon. Other manufacturers are the Pentax, Sony and Sigma.

Which camera should I buy ?

I think Canon and Nikon are the most obvious choice because of their huge lens lineup and best overall quality. I suggest to put money in lenses first instead of expensive cameras, if we have the budget for them. The picture quality mainly depend on lenses. The small difference between cameras only can be seen if we use very good lenses on them. Even an excellent camera cannot make a good picture with a bad lens attached. The detail missed cannot put back on the camera sensor. The price of the new cameras falls in 1-2 years significantly while even old good quality used lenses are keep their value. What does it mean ? Better buy a good lens with a cheaper camera than an expensive camera with an average lens.
