Introduction – Samyang 12mm 1:2.0 NCS CS

Samyang by now become famous because of their high quality manual focus lenses. The Samyang lenses are selled under different names like Rokinon, Bower, Pro-Optic, Wallimex, Vivitar, Polar, etc. Samyang lenses are available for Canon, Nikon and other mounts. Samyang likes to make wide angle lenses with f/1.4-f/2.8 brightness. Most of this lenses are compact, and very well build, high quality optics, for an affordable price. Some of them are super-sharp like the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 for example. Many of this lenses has a great price/performance value like the 14mm f/2.8, the Samyang 8mm f/3.5, the Samyang 24mm f/1.4, the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 or the Samyang 8mm f/1.4mm. The new Samyang 12mm lens is designed for Aps-C sensored mirrorless cameras like Canon Eos M, Fuji X, Sony E or Samsung Nx mounts. With it’s light weight (245g), good build, bright aperture and wide angle this new Samyang lens seems promising for mirrorless cameras. This cameras are more and more popular but this kind of wide angle bright prime lenses are very rare in this segment.

I have not yet the chance to review the lens, but early reviews seem very positive. The price is not high for such a lens. The 12mm angle is very nice. No other such lenses available with f/2 aperture, which makes the viewfinder brighter as well. Samyang lenses are interesting because of their usually very fine build quality and excellent optical qualities. The Samyang lenses I checked are very sharp stopped down, but usually wide open lacking a little bit of contrast unlike some Canon or Nikon lenses. Usually the sharpness of Samyang lenses is quite good even wide open. It is important to know that usually these lenses does not have electrical connection with the camera bodies, meaning you cannot check exif data afterwards like aperture, shutter speed, or other datas. Distance scales markings are not always correct, you can find infinity little further than marking, etc. Manual focus is usually a joy to use on Samyang lenses. All in all if you interested in this lens can be a very good value if you can accept it’s shortcomings. The 245g is very light for such a wide angle lens.
