Outperform, Outdo, Outlast: The D5 raises the bar for FX performance
The most powerful digital SLR flagship in the Nikon line-up leads the pack with unmatched speed and precision

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation today announces the new D5, a FX-format flagship digital SLR camera that challenges photographers to outperform their highest standards, and set new benchmarks for speed, accuracy and image quality. Expanding the possibilities of image capture for professional photographers, the new D5 places the needs of the professional at the centre of innovation with features that enable smooth and reliable responsiveness to a wide variety of scenes and subjects.

From the refined acquisition of subjects in motion, to 4K video in UHD, the D5 creates opportunities for dauntless photographers working in demanding shooting environments to push their gear to new limits. With a next generation AF system the intelligent and versatile tracking of moving subjects enables the richness and realism of every split-second moment to be captured. The D5 boasts a wide range of ISO sensitivity up to 102400, expandable to Hi 5 (ISO 3280000 equivalent) — the most expanded sensitivity range in Nikon history — for astronomical twilight with minimum illumination, capturing details and colors beyond the limits of the human eye.

“The Nikon D5 is not just about technical excellence, but the marriage of elegant technologies. Speed and refined image quality have never converged so extensively, making it truly the camera that the industry has been waiting for,” said Tadashi Nakayama, Corporate Vice President, Sector Manager of Marketing Sector, Imaging Business Unit. “The D5 represents what we are trying to do for the entire digital SLR category: Bringing technologies together to meet and anticipate the demands of professional photographers, empowering them to push the boundaries of their craft,” he continues.

Outperform, Outdo, Outlast: The Pinnacle of Digital SLR Engineering for Professionals

The D5 enables the precise capture of subjects under the most demanding conditions with a new-generation 153-point AF system and a stable viewfinder image that makes tracking moving subjects easy, even during high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 12 fps*1, making the camera ideal for photojournalists capturing heart-racing sporting action and majestic animal migrations. Image quality is further enhanced by the pairing of the new Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor and the brand new EXPEED 5 image-processing engine, for the most vibrant, true-to-life colors and sumptuous details. Together with the highest standard ISO sensitivity in Nikon history, up to102400, photographers are liberated from the challenges of shooting in low-light environments whether covering evening events or shooting indoors. In another first for the FX-format range, the D5 takes movie-making to new cinematic heights with the ability to shoot in 4K UHD 2160/30p format, in-line with the increasing appetite from professionals for the production of high quality video content.

Convenient Connectivity, Simplified Workflows

In addition, new and improved features and functions, such as a high-resolution touch screen LCD monitor, faster wired networks (via built-in Ethernet connector) and wireless networks*2, and double memory card slots*3 that use the same type of media, to simplify and speed up the professional photographer’s workflow, while placing the D5 in the center of the connected ecosystem for visual communication.

Designed for the Field and the Studio

The camera’s Advanced Scene Recognition System, which has adopted a new 180k-pixel RGB sensor, contributes to greater AF, AE, and AWB performance. This, along with a design that consumes less power and adoption of a highly precise and durable shutter, ensures durability, and gives photographers greater control over their gear as well as image quality. The D5 also completely integrates into any professional photographer’s comprehensive ecosystem of Nikon accessories. Compatibility with the new Nikon Creative Lighting System functions, radio-controlled Advanced Wireless Lighting (AWL) and unified flash control, all work to ensure the production of superlative image quality and a seamless studio workflow*4

*1Possible in Continuous high speed (CH) release mode with shutter speeds of 1/250 s or faster
*2When used with WT-6/A/B/C Wireless Transmitter (available separately)
*3The camera is available in two versions, one that uses two XQD cards and one that uses two CompactFlash cards
*4When used with Speedlight SB-5000 (available separately)

Primary features

Next-generation Intelligent AF System

The entire AF system has been completely re-vamped with adoption of the Multi-CAM 20K autofocus sensor module. This sensor module offers 153 focus points (99 of which are cross-type sensors) for broad and dense coverage of the entire image area. The center focus point has a detection range beginning at an incredible -4 EV, and detection with other focus points begins at -3 EV*, enabling autofocusing even under extremely dim lighting, and with subjects exhibiting very low contrast. In addition, equipping the camera with a dedicated AF engine capable of high-speed calculation and collaboration with the 180K-pixel RGB sensor have ensured that extremely reliable AF performance is demonstrated with a variety of scenes.
*At ISO 100, 20 °C/68 °F
High-speed continuous shooting at approx. 12 fps with swift subject tracking

The D5 is capable of high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 12 fps*1 (w/ AF and AE tracking) in all image quality modes and at all ISO sensitivity settings. What’s more, adoption of a new mirror drive mechanism achieves a more stable viewfinder image that makes continuous tracking of rapidly moving subjects easy, even with high-speed continuous shooting. Further, up to 200*2 12-bit lossless compressed RAW images can be captured with a single burst of continuous shooting.
*1Possible in Continuous high speed (CH) release mode with shutter speeds of 1/250 s or faster
*2When Lexar Professional 2933x XQD 2.0 memory cards are used
Exceptional ISO sensitivity

Collaboration between the new Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor and the new EXPEED 5 image-processing engine, both developed by Nikon, have enabled the highest standard ISO sensitivity in Nikon history, that of ISO 102400. High-sensitivity image quality at these never-before-seen levels achieves superior imaging quality, even within the high ISO 3200 to 12800 range often used with sports photography and the like. In addition, the image sensor’s broad dynamic range enables rich and natural expression of tones for accurate reproduction of the finest details, even with extremely vivid subjects with which the expression of textures is especially difficult.
Cinematic brilliance with 4K UHD (30p) movie capability

The D5 supports movie creation in 4K, which offers a resolution higher than HD or full-HD movies, an indispensable feature for professionals involved in film-making and video content creation. High-resolution 4K UHD (3840 x 2160)/30p, 25p, 24p movies can be recorded to a memory card inserted in the camera, or, with simultaneous HDMI output, they can be displayed on an external monitor or recorded as uncompressed video to an external recorder. With support for the maximum standard sensitivity of ISO 102400, as well as even higher sensitivity settings up to Hi 5 (equivalent to ISO 3280000), even movies recorded at these high sensitivities will exhibit superior picture quality. 4K UHD time-lapse movies can also be generated in-camera.
Improved functionality and streamlined workflows
A high-resolution 3.2-in., approx. 2,359k-dot touch screen LCD monitor

Adoption of a touch screen for the display monitor enables nimble confirmation and high-speed navigation of a large number of images using a frame advance bar, and supports an efficient workflow with text input and the like. The large 3.2-inch, approximately 2,359k-dot high-resolution monitor enables extremely clear display with live view photography, even when the display is enlarged, for fast focus confirmation.
Connect through wired and wireless networks

The communications system has been significantly improved to support communications twice as fast as with the D4S, with both wired networks using the Ethernet connector built into the D5, and wireless networks when the new Wireless Transmitter WT-6/A/B/C (available separately) is used with the D5.
Versatile image storage options

Two versions of the D5 are available. Both are equipped with double memory card slots supporting a single media type; one XQD cards and one CompactFlash cards.
Accessories for high-speed connected convenience: WT-6/A/B/C Wireless Transmitter(available separately)

When connected to the D5, the high-speed transfer of image data to a computer*1 or an FTP server over a wireless network is possible. The maximum range is approximately 200 m*2. Communications are significantly faster with support for the new IEEE 802.11ac (2×2 VHT80) standard. Wireless control over the camera from a computer is also possible using Camera Control Pro 2 (available separately). A D5 to which a WT-6/A/B/C is connected may be used as a wireless LAN access point, and a direct connection to a computer or smartphone is also achievable.
*1The Wireless Transmitter Utility (available for download from Nikon’s website) must be installed on the computer
*2With large antenna at wireless LAN access point. Range varies with signal strength and presence or absence of obstacles

Sigma 20mm 1.4 Art

Sigma 20mm 1.4 Art
According to our informations a new Sigma 20mm 1.4 Art wide angle lens is coming in the near future. The field of view is 94.5° on Full frame cameras.

This focal length is very interesting. The lens has 9 aperture blades. With the bright f/1.4 aperture it is not a light lens, the weight of the lens is 950g (2.09 lbs.)

The optical design is 15 lens elements in 11 groups which means it is not a simple lens. If Sigma can keep the quality of it’s latest lenses like the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art , Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art or the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 Art it will be a HOT SELLER.

The story, I guess will be about how sharp the corners are, and the huge vignetting, which is expected for such a lens, but Sigma included 2 FLD and 5 SLD (!) glass in the optical design to make things happen. For those who has no information about the newest Sigma Art lenses, these lenses put Canon, Nikon lenses to shame even wide open. See my reviews at above links about these lenses, very few lenses out there to compete with these quality. Pin sharp f/1.4 performance, which is simply not existed before. For example at 50mm no other product can be even close to Sigma.

But this 20mm has very strong rivals namely the Wonderful Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 and the new Canon 11-24mm f/4. Sigma’s big benefit is the price, because both of these lenses play in the more expensive region. The Sigma costs 899 USD, while the Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8G is 1997 USD, the new Canon 11-24mm f/4 is 3000 USD.

The lens will be available in Canon EF, Nikon F, and Sigma SA mounts.

Sigma 20mm 1.4 Art price

The initial price of the new lens is 899 USD. Regarding construction quality this lens looks similar as the aforementioned lenses. Excellent build with new TSC (Thermally stable composite first used by Sigma Art line) material used.

Sigma 20mm 1.4 Art release date

The lens will be available from November 2015 according to our information.

Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 lens

Zeiss 28mm 1.4 release date
The new lens is marketed as “The World’s best wide angle lens”. There is a Zeiss 55mm and a Zeiss 85mm lens in this same lens family as well. The lens design is quite complex: 16 lens elements in 13 groups, including floating elements as well, which is usually used in Macro lenses to improve close focus performance.

This is a wide angle manual focus lens for Canon and Nikon FF cameras. The Canon EF mount version has ZE, the Nikon F mount version has a ZF.2 moniker.

The weight of the lens is 1.35 and 1.39 kg respectively, so it is not a mirrorless wonder, but a heavy beast. It is partly because of the quite bright f/1.4 aperture. This bright aperture makes the lens much more interesting: night photos, urban landscapes can benefit from this feature.

The other reason is the metal construction, this a metal lens, with a very precise focusing ring.

The price of the lens is not yet known, but the two other brother costs around 4000 and 4500 USD respectively. The lens is expected to be available in 2016.

Tamron 45mm 1.8 vc USD Model F013

Tamron 45mm

Tamron annouced the new Tamron 45mm 1.8 vc USd lens with the Tamron 35mm f/1.8 USD. This lens is a little longer than the 35mm, specifically this is exactly a normal lens, with a similar perspective as the human vision.

Usually 50mm lenses called ‘normal’ in photography, but in reality 45mm is closer to the reality. When I speak about human vision I don’t speak about anything you can possible see, rather than the center portion of our vision which is a lot narrower perspective. It is important to note that all this is applied to the Full frame or film camera, which has a 35mm wide sensor.

On a smaller sensor Aps-C camera it is a short telephoto range with a lot narrower view, but very useful for portraits for example. On the other hand for landscapes or wider shots the normal lens is not really useful in the Aps-C camera. This is why I sold my 50mm lens, because I hardly find any other use than portrait on a smaller sensor (and for portraits I prefer longer telephoto lenses), and bought a 35mm instead. The 50mm or 45mm is perfect for a wedding on the Aps-C (DX) camera, even for a one lens-do-everything solution.

Many photographers in the past only used this bright normal lenses (usually 50mm in that time) for their work.

Tamron 45mm 1.8 vc USD Model F013 feautures

The new Tamron 45mm has the following feautures:

– 45mm focal length

– bright f/1.8 aperture (there are brighter lenses as well on the market with f/1.2 or f/1.4 aperture)

– stabilizer (this is unique no other such lens has stabilizer yet, the Sony version lacks the stabilizer, as it is in the camera body)

– ultrasonic motor

Tamron 45mm 1.8 vc USD Model F013 specification

The new Tamron has closer MFD (31cm vs 45cm for most other normal lenses) and has a stabilizer. The stabilizer mostly useful at still subjects and for video recording.

Tamron 45mm 1.8 vc USD Model F013 rivals / competitors

The biggest competitor is the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens, which is tack sharp at f/1.4, unlike the Canon and Nikon versions. The Sigma is more expensive but brighter, and I guess sharper as well. If the Tamron can get better, than it can be a hot seller as well.

Tamron 35mm f1.8 Di VC USD (Model F012)

tamron 35mm f1.8

A new prime lens is coming from Tamron. It is really interesting that Tamron starts to produce prime lenses as well. It is not the first prime lens Tamron produces there are several macro lenses as well for example the Tamron 90mm Macro and the Tamron 180mm Macro.

Available mounts

The lens will be available in Canon EF, Nikon F, and Sony E mounts. The Sony version lacks the stabilizer.

What is it good for ?

The lens is targeted for photojournalism, where this wide angle on a Full frame camera is very useful. Apart from photojournalism this wide angle coverage is perfect fit for any purpose from landscapes to portraits. For portraits the distortion is very important together with the quality of the out of focus blur the bokeh. The fast f/1.8 aperture can be useful to create a nice bokeh, especially on a Full frame camera where the bokeh is more pronounced.

The lens has Tamron’s ultrasonic motor, and a lens has a stabilizer as well. According to my experience the stabilizer is not that effective on wide angle lenses though.

Build construction

The lens has a very nice build quality. It is a metal lens with gaskets around the lens mount for water sealing. The filter thread is also metal which is quite unique these days.

Optical construction

tamron 35mm 1.8 MTF
The optical construction is not the classical 6/5 Gauss design without any special higher performance lens elements which was sold for decades by many manufacturers. Tamron’s special XLD glass looks especially interesting.

[do_widget Text]

Apart from the XLD glass, there are LD glass and molded asperical elements as well.

The lens has 10 elements in 9 groups.

MTF Chart

mtf tamron 35mm 1.8The MTF chart shows contrast and resolution started from the center of the lens. The resolution is the line above the contrast is the line below. The better performance is if the lines are higher everywhere, if we go to the sides of the lens.

Tamron 35m f1.8 Di VC USD review

No review yet, but according to my experience with other Tamron lenses, this lens will be very competitive. Almost all Tamron lenses are very competitive in terms of price and optical performance as well even against brand products like Canon and Nikon, just think about the Tamron 150-600mm which creates a lots of turmoil on the market, motivates Sigma and Nikon to release new better priced products, even Canon is rumored to have an affordable tele, but this is not 100% sure, as I guess. Many would like to I think.

Other factor to consider is the success of the new Sigma Art line lenses. The Sigma 18-35mm , the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 or the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lenses are very successful lenses. I am sure manufacturers observe what the concurrence is doing, and what is successful on the market.

Tamron 35m f1.8 Di VC USD price

The initial price of the new lens is 599 USD.

Tamron 35m f1.8 Di VC USD release date

The release date of the new Tamron 35mm f1.8 is end of September 2015. The Sony version comes later.

Tamron 35m f1.8 Di VC USD specifications

The new lens has a minimum focus distance of 8.64″ (20cm), which is quite good. This wide angle lenses usually not preferred for macro, but the possibility to make nice close-up shots is interesting. The filter thread is 67mm. The weight of the lens is around 500g, the different mount versions has different weight. The aperture can be adjusted between f/1.8 and f/16.

An interesting film about the last Trapper, Norman Winther, who lives in the Yukon area, in a self-made wooden house in the wild with his wife, May Loo, with two horses, and several sled-dogs.

What happen with Sigma Art lenses ?

Sigma 24-35mm f2

In the last years Sigma recreates itself. They released some legendary lenses like the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art or the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 Art or the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art. Many of these lenses are class leading lenses unprecedented before.

Many people now interested which will be the next Sigma Art series lens ?

[do_widget Text]

The two recently released lenses are the Sigma 24-35mm f/2 Art and the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art lenses. Currently Photozone.de tested the Sigma 24 f/1.4mm on a 50 megapixel Canon 5ds camera. According to them it is a very sharp lens but the corners wide open are not so sharp, must stop down the lens to f/2.8 – f/4 range in order to get sharp corners. It is more complicated lens to design, but seems it is similar to the Canon 24mm f/1.4 II. The Sigma 24mm f/1.4 is not as phenomenal as some of it’s earlier cousins, according to photozone.de it is the weakest of the current Sigma Art primes.

The Sigma 24-35mm f/2 Art is a very sharp lens, as currently the lensrentals team tested it. This is a first f/2 Full frame zoom available in the market.

Sigma is keeping to make extraordinary lenses which many says impossible to produce. The next Sigma prime can be the 85mm f/1.4 or the 135mm f/2, which is currently lacks in the Sigma lineup. Obviously Sigma is inspired by the success they experienced and wants to release more and more lenses, mostly primes. Many interested about the 70-200mm f/2.8 which is not very likely. New Sigma lenses also can be used on Sony cameras with a Metabones adapter.

Rokinon Xeen lenses

Rokinon Xeen lenses

These Rokinon lenses especially designed for film-making. This is why there is a thread on the lens barrell. These lenses has a bright T1.5 aperture (Transmission value this is used in cinema instead of f-stops). The lenses has a very solid built from metal, internal focusing, but no electrical coupling with the camera, means no lens data like aperture in Exif and only manual focusing is available.

The question is do these lenses different than the Samyang photographic or Cine Ds lenses ?
As I understand these lenses have different coatings but optically identical.
