The Canon 1Dx II said to be a high Dynamic range camera based on Dual pixel technology. Magic Lantern managed to add 3 EV dynamic range to certain Canon models using dual pixel technology.

Trends

The competition on the camera market is extremely high. Not so long ago Canon didn’t have a serious competitor apart from Nikon. Today Sony and Fujifilm comes up with better and better cameras, sensors, and Olympus, Panasonic is also improved a lot. Samsung also wants to break in the market.

Nikon released 4 Full frame models recently.(Nikon D4s, D750, D810, DF). Both Canon and Nikon seems hardly stress the high-end pro market, while the future of the entry segment is not really defined. Canon seems skipped the 750d/T6i for 2014, perhaps can come in 2015 hopefully with a better 20 Mpix sensor and Dual pixel live view focusing.

There are rumors about EVF (electronic viewfinder) in the entry-level models, hope it is not true. For landscapes the LCD is ok, but not for birds/wildlife macro/portrait/aviation and many other applications.

On the other hand any possible size reduction would be interesting, like the Canon 100D which has a good bargain price today.

Canon has just released the 7d Mk II with many functions inherited form the 6d/5d Mk III. The picture quality is nice but nothing to rave about. For me seems similar to the older 7d, but with better software/noise control. You can check the samples at below link about the 7d Mk II.

Two new Full frame models rumored for 2015, with interesting features.

There are many possibilities, the Canon 1D C II is one of the possibility with Dual pixel AF and modular build (something like Cinema EOS the camera has different parts that can be treated separately, like LCD panel, viewfinder etc).

Canon 5d Mk IV, Canon 6d Mk II, Canon 1D X II are the other possibilities, or a completely new Full frame camera. At some places can be read that the Canon 6d discontinued by the manufacturer. What does it mean it is not sure.

To buy a more expensive model instead or the new Mark II is coming. Hope the second is true that a new camera comes with improved features. The Canon 6d was an extremely popular model thanks to its lower price.

There is a rumor that Canon participate in medium format

Earlier rumor tells about this, but today essentially all sensor in medium format supplied by Sony. Phase one, Hasselblad, Pentax all has Sony sensors.
So
Canon will have a new Medium format sensor or use Sony sensor as well ?

Best Dslr cameras 2016 – Newest cameras

Here we collect the newest models coming out to light. 🙂

Nikon d7200

The new Nikon d7200 like its predecessors look a very strong camera. The native ISO range is 100-25,600 + there is two higher sensitivites up to a whopping ISO 102,400 but only is Black and White jpeg. Nikon seems serious about competition. The new camera also can make in camera time lapse videos with exposure smoothing up to 9999 frames.

Canon 5ds and Canon 5ds R cameras

Canon 5ds
Canon has started to run in 2015. The starting is two Full frame Dslr with an Aps-C like sensor. What does it mean ? The two new Canon Dslr has 50.6 Megapixel sensor which is equal to 20 megapixel in Aps-C. The price of these Dslrs are 3700 and 3900 USD respectively, the newer more expensive model lacks AA filter in front of the sensor. In reality there is but Canon says the algorithm is different for the two camera. These new cameras does not have the Dual pixel af system of the 7d II or the Canon 70d. The video is HD quality with the highest frame rate of 29.97 fps. In reality these cameras are the Canon 7d Mk II with a wider sensor. The native ISO range is 100-6400 can be extended to 12,800. The cameras has a 1.3x and 1.6x crop mode as well. If your main target is low light the Canon 5d mk3 is obviously much better. If your main target is wildlife / landscape combo perhaps can these cameras can be interesting. No built in wifi. The af system of the new Canon 7d Mk II is better, because these cameras has the 61/41 af system of the 5d Mk III, while the Canon 7d Mk II has a 65 all cross type af system of the Canon 1Dx.

Canon 750d and Canon 760d Rebel T6i/ Rebel T6s cameras

Canon Rebel T6s
Two Aps-C Canon Dslr also coming with a 24 Megapixel CMOS sensor, the first of the small pixels in Canon land. The Canon 760d has a top LCD as well and some more advanced functions. The cameras has a Hybrid Af system, using phase detect and contrast detect points as well. The price difference is 100 USD (749 vs 849 dollar). Both cameras has a vari-angle Touchscreen. Both cameras can record HD video at 29.97 fps frame rate. The native ISO range is between 100-12,800.

Nikon d5500 Aps-C camera

Nikon released the new Nikon d5500 camera. The new camera similar to the predecessor in many ways. The main difference that the new model has Touchscreen which is the first in any Nikon Dslr camera, and built in Wifi connectivity. These features allows the camera can be controlled via a smart phone including shutter releasing and autofocus functions as well. The new camera lacks the GPS unit which was in the older model. read more about the Nikon d5500 here

Canon 7d Mk II fast action Aps-C camera

Canon 7d Mk II is released in 2014. The initial price is quite steep with 1700 USD, the newest Canon has an ISO range of 100-16,000, can be extended to ISO 51,200. Many function was inherited from the Higher end Full frame models, like distortion correction, vignetting correction, CA correction, and has some unique features like digital compass or GPS, which let’s the user to save datas like geometrical location or compass points to the photo, which is useful for example landscapes to save which direction and where we make the photo at which exact time. The camera can shoot 10 fps in burst mode, and has a very quick, capable af system. read more about the Canon 7d Mk II here

Nikon d750 multimedia FF camera

A new Nikon d750 camera is released. This is a Full frame format multimedia camera as Nikon calls it. The camera has a 24 megapixel Full format sensor with an ISO range of 100-12,800 extended to 51,200. Continuous shooting capability is up to 6.5 fps. The price of the camera is 2300 dollar. The camera has a tiltable 1229K dot LCD screen and Wifi connectivity. The camera can record HD video(1920*1080) at a frame rate of 60/50/30/25/24 fps. The maximium length of clips is 29min59sec in the highest resolution setting. The camera can record uncompressed video format to an external recorder. The camera has excellent wide 14.5 EV dynamic range, with excellent High ISO performance, even slightly better than the performance of the Nikon D810. Read more about the new Nikon d750 here

Nikon d810 36 Megapixel Full frame camera

nikon d810
The Nikon d810 is following the 36Mp D800 line. Like the Nikon d800E, the Nikon d810 lacks AA filter in front of the sensor. This is one of the best camera you can get, the picture quality is comparable to Medium format models. High dynamic range, extremely high resolution and very good ISO performance. For this very sharp sensor, very sharp lenses needed. If you want to print big, or have a set of super sharp lenses for wildlife this camera is currently the best you can get, Canon has nothing similar at the moment. Compare to the predecessor the Nikon d810 has updated an AF system (autofocusing up to -2 EV as the Nikon d7100, and af is f/8 which means it is better with teleconverters), flat picture style for video. The camera makes huge files (40MB Nef). The buffer is 58 frames and 100 frames in Dx mode. The sensor is essentially the same as the sensor in the Nikon D800E. Same ISO performance, dynamic range and color response. The shutter sound is better on the newer Nikon d810 (quieter), than the shutter sound of the Nikon d800e. The initial price of the new Nikon d810 is 3300 Dollar.
Read more about the new Nikon d810 here
The Pentax KS-1 entry level model is the current latest camera in the Dslr segment.
Canon 7d Mk II, Canon 750d – at the time of writing not released yet, but will be the topic for the future for sure.
Nikon d7200 is a also a very much awaited camera, especially if it will be the predecessor of the Nikon d300 in some ways. If the burst mode will be long enough perhaps wanted by many people, that would help, or will be restricted as the burst mode of the Nikon d7100.
The Pentax K3 and K5 IIs cameras are also very good, with an excellent 24Mp Sony sensor. Pentax also released a new 1.4x Pentax teleconverter. The medium format Pentax 645D also has a mk II version with a 44*33mm medium format sensor. No Full frame Pentax camera yet, but seems there is a rumor about a new Full Frame Pentax camera coming in 2015.

Best Dslr cameras 2016 – camera curiosities

The Nikon Df is an interesting looking retro styles Full frame camera, with excellent low light abilities but without video function.
Best Dslr cameras 2015 - Nikon Df
Sony has two Full frame mirrorless cameras the Sony 7 And Sony 7R. In the meantime the new Sony a7s is also released with a 12Mp sensor, which enables it for excellent low light performance.
The Panasonic GH4 is also a very interesting new video camera with a 4K video ability.
pentax news
In the middle format there are also some interesting cameras like the Pentax 645D II for example. Pentax currently doesn’t have a FF camera, but has a medium format 645D.

Best Dslr cameras 2016 – lens roundup

My favourite theme is the lenses. One can have the best Full frame or even medium format camera with a mediocre lens, and easily can be beaten by a very good lens and the cheapest slr camera.

In lens department Canon and Nikon has a good advantage. They have many really good, fast ultrasonic focusing, image stabilized lenses. Many of this lenses are truly exceptional and unrivalled by the other manufacturers. Apart from the really expensive “pro” lenses, there are good cheaper offerings as well. Even some of the cheapest lenses are not bad at all. Canon and Nikon Lens reviews

Sony in the latest times works diligently to broaden their lens range, many lenses are available for Sony cameras as well.

Pentax has also a very good range of lenses, but weak in the telephoto range where Canon and Nikon are the strongest.

Micro Four third system (mirrorless cameras with a little smaller sensor and significantly smaller cameras, Panasonic and Olympus) has also a wider and wider range of lenses.

Fujifilm currently makes his revolutionary new sensor but the lens range today is a little limited, only several lenses are available for the new X-mount cameras.

Sigma and Tamron are also makes a wide range of lenses for almost any camera mounts. Some of their products are very competitive and better than the Canon and Nikon offerings in some aspects. The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4mm, and the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and the new Tamron 150-600 mm zoom lenses are very interesting.

Leica also has a very strong lineup of lenses in a very high quality, unfortunately in a very high price.

Best Dslr cameras 2016 – what is our budget

An interesting question what we can get for our money. I would chose three aspects.
1. Sensor quality – interestingly Fuji, Olympus, Nikon, Sony are making very good new sensors, Pentax uses Sony sensor, while as I see Canon and Panasonic is a little behind in terms of innovation. This doesn’t mean they make bad cameras, but currently they uses the older sensors in their cameras. Canon makes better sensors in Full frame cameras, but not yet in the entry level segment.
2. Lens lineup – here Canon and Nikon wins hands down.
3. Autofocus and other camera functions

If we are on a tight budget I think we can get the best value if we buy Canon or Nikon entry level slr cameras. Some of this cameras are dirt cheap compare to other models, but compare to compact cameras miles apart from them. Pentax cameras also has a very good value. The Sony cameras currently uses translucent mirrors. I think this cameras not yet so polished. The Mirrorless Olympus and Panasonic cameras are also good, if we prefer the smaller, mirrorless construction. Fuji also makes his very good revolutionary new sensor but the current high price makes them not so good in terms of price/performance.

What I would buy today?

Today I think Nikon has the most interesting offerings on the market in entry level cameras. In mirrorless segment the Sony cameras has very good value, but this cameras little bit like compact cameras with very good Dslr like picture quality. In Full frame Canon and Nikon has very good offerings. The Canon 6d and the Nikon d610 is especially interesting because of their smaller size.

Best Canon entry level Dslr cameras 2015

The Canon 100D is a good deal today, with the significantly cheaper price. This is really a compact camera with its approximately 400g weight. The Canon 750d will be perhaps the best entry-level camera, if Canon somehow willing to release it. The Canon 600d and Canon 650d is also very good. I would skip the Canon 700d. This cameras has flip-out screens, which is very useful in multiple situations especially for movies.

Best Canon enthusiast/crop sensored Dslr cameras 2015

The Canon 7d and the Canon 70d is the best here. The older Canon 60d is also good especially for video recording because of the flipout screen, but lacks the dual pixel autofocusing which the Canon 70d has. Basically the cameras from Canon 550d to Canon 60d has the same 18 Mpixel sensor. The new Canon 70d has a little better 20.2 Megapixel sensor.

Best Canon Aps-C Dslr cameras 2015

Currently the Canon 70d is the best Dslr camera. This camera has currently the best video autofocus among Dslr cameras. The new Dual-pixel autofocusing system is makes a difference in video recording.

Best Canon Full frame Dslr cameras 2015

Perhaps the Canon 6d is the best deal today. This Full frame camera has an excellent low light ability and the smaller size and cheaper price is an added bonus. The only downside is just the few autofocus points(11) and only one cross type point compare to the rivals. The Flagship camera is the Canon 1 D X. The Canon 1 D C is a camera for movie makers with a 4K video capabilities.

The Nikon cameras are generally very good today. The new 24 Mpixel Aps-C sensor is superb with excellent low light capabilities. The older 16 Mpixel unit is essentially the same with a little smaller resolution.

Best Nikon entry level Dslr cameras

Depends on a budget you cannot go wrong any of them started from the Nikon d3100 until Nikon d5300, Nikon d3200,d3300 included. I wouldn’t buy the Nikon d5300 though, I would buy the Nikon d7000 instead. Not everybody like me someone prefers the higher megapixel count, and advanced Wifi and other features. For photograpy the Nikon d7000 is a much better camera.

Best Nikon enthusiast Dslr cameras

The Nikon d7100 is a very good enthusiast camera, but not the same quality as the former Nikon d300. There is a rumor about a new Nikon d9300 which perhaps comes in the place of the Nikon d300.

The Nikon D4S is the newest low light cameras with a 16 Mpixel sensor. For those interested in Mega-resolution the Nikon d800 is the best camera with a wide 14.4 EV dynamic range. The Nikon d610 is also a very good capable camera on a lower budget. Despite the lower price this is a very capable camera, with excellent low-light performance, and even feautures a built-in-flash which is rare in FF models. The former Nikon d600 has oil/dust problems on the sensor.

Best Pentax Dslr cameras

Pentax cameras today uses Sony sensors, as Nikon did in the past. Pentax K3 is the best Pentax camera today, or the Pentax K5 IIs if we think about sensor department, if we don’t count the middle format. The Pentax K5 IIs features a full glass viewfinder, a sensor without AA filter, ISO range of 100-51,200(expanded). Pentax cameras usually have a built in image stabilization system, which usually Canon and Nikon cameras lacks. Canon and Nikon puts the stabilizer in the lens, while Pentax makes image stabilized camera bodies. The sensor moves this way eliminate shake. This system allows stabilization with any lens attached, while the lens stabilizer only works with lenses with stabilizer functions. Stabilized lenses are usually much more expensive. Pentax also has a medium format camera with a 44*33mm sensor, the Pentax 645 DII.

Best Sigma Dslr cameras

Sigma makes interesting Foveon sensored cameras, but this cameras are not so widely spread. There is a rumor that Canon also intend to make some Foveon sensor cameras, but this is not really confirmed yet. Earlier Sigma was known to make cheap lenses usually with not the highest quality. Today Sigma makes some truly exceptional lenses like the new Sigma 35mm f/1.4 A, 50mm 1.4 A (art) or the new Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 which is a smaller format zoom lens. The newest camera is the Aps-C sensored Sigma DP3 Merill.

Best Dslr cameras 2015 – general recommendation

It is hard to recommend the camera without knowing the aim with the camera. Many people use cameras for different purposes. Most people use cameras for holiday pictures and family events. Other people makes sport photographs. Others are enthusiast about macro photography. Others are making photos of birds or wildlife. Many people like to make landscapes. Some people sports with all of these kinds of photography. The budget for a camera is also different: most people has limited budget, some people has a budget for the most advanced and expensive products. Some people earn her/his money with photography, most people are takes photographs as a hobby. For wildlife Canon or Nikon is the best choice regarding their lens lineup. For wildlife the proper lens is the key issue. Although Tamron released recently a very interesting 160-600mm zoom lens, in very good quality, which is perhaps will be available for Pentax and Sony mount as well. Pentax, Sony and formerly Nikon used Sony sensors with an excellent wide dynamic range which is very good for landscape photography. Newer Toshiba sensors in the Nikon cameras are also very good, even little better in low light. The difference is not huge, compare to the older Sony units used in Nikon d7000 and Nikon d5100 cameras for example. My top choice in cameras are Canon and Nikon (I have both), or Nikon and Canon. Why? Because for this cameras has the most available lenses, accessories, programs, and because these cameras has the best overall quality, most refined design and function proven by many professional photographers. In camera bodies currently Nikon is significantly better. The 24Mp crop sensor and the 36Mp full frame sensor is significantly better than anything Canon currently can offer. However the most difference made in picture quality is depend vastly in lenses. In lens department I think Canon is better than Nikon, especially if you consider the price of the quality products. Canon can offer extremely good lenses like Canon 135 f/2, Canon 200mm f/2.8, Canon 400mm f/5.6 or Canon 70-200mm f4 at a relatively affordable price (not cheap) for enthusiasts, while in Nikon land must pay much more, if the same lens exists at all. For landscapes I recommend Nikon because of the wider dynamic range which is a huge advantage. Nikon also offers relatively higher quality wider range zooms more cheaply than Canon ( Nikon 16-85mm Vr, Nikon 18-105mm ). The Nikon 35 f/1.8 lens is also very interesting. Pentax cameras are using generally the same Sony sensor as Nikon, these cameras are also very high quality. Lens lineup is also wide but not up to Canon and Nikon, especially in the telephoto segment, where the other two is very strong. If you serious about photography sooner or later used high quality lenses will be very interesting for you. In this area you can choose many Canon mount lenses, little less Nikon and significantly less Pentax lenses according to my experience.

My thoughts:

Landscape: Nikon or Pentax because of dynamic range
Wildlife/birds: Canon, or Nikon (Canon lenses are cheaper the cheapest really good is the Canon 400mm f/5.6 which is quite good even with the 1.4 converter, and significantly cheaper than the Nikon 300 f/4+1.4 converter combination which is approximately the same quality, the Nikon won’t be as 600mm though)
Portrait: Canon or Nikon
Night:Nikon or Pentax

Mirrorless cameras

Panasonic GH4 is a very interesting camera with 4k video, the camera can be bought with an interface unit as well, as a complete broadcast solution.

Sony 7 and Sony 7s are Full Frame mirrorless cameras, a very interesting small and light combination, perhaps a dream for many.
Sony a6000 and Sony a5000(formerly called Nex). The Sony a6000 is the predecessor of the Sony Nex 6, the Sony a5000 is coming in the place of the Sony Nex5. Sony claims that cameras has the fastest hybrid autofocus system in the world. Of course I wouldn’t put 1000 dollar for such statements.

Best Sony mirrorless cameras

Sony bought Konica Minolta in 2006. In the near future or already Sony will be the third biggest camera brand/supplier.
The former Sony Nex cameras now they call a(alpha). The newest ones are the Sony a6000 and Sony a5000. This Nex cameras has very good value, if we prefer the smaller size over reflex construction with an optical viewfinder.
Sony recently released the Sony 7 and Sony 7R cameras, which is according to the rumor has caused the Sony lens design team to disappear completely. It is interesting nonetheless, many people wish to have a compact Full frame camera. Seems not easy to design proper lenses for this construction though.

Best Fujifilm mirrorless cameras

Fujifilm makes mirrorless cameras with Aps-C sized sensor. Currently the newest is the Fujifilm X-T1. This cameras has truly excellent low light performance thanks to the new algorithm of the sensor. The price is little high now, perhaps will be more affordable in the future. This cameras has a hybrid viewfinder and a retro oldish style look, like the Nikon DF.

Best Panasonic mirrorless cameras

panasonic gh4
Panasonic GH4 is the best current Panasonic camera regarding sensor performance, with a wide 13.3 EV dynamic range, but the low light performance is not up to slr cameras. For video recording the camera has exceptional abilities, can record 4K video as well. All Panasonic cameras has currently a 16 Mpixel sensor.
Panasonic GH4 detailed specification

Best Olympus mirrorless cameras

Currently Olympus E-M1 is the best mirrorless camera, and arguable the best smaller mirrorless camera in the segment (Sony has some Full frame mirrorless cameras). The Olympus E-M1 has a very fast autofocus in good light, good high iso performance, a good viewfinder and small size compare to Slr models. The Olympus E-M10 is also a newer model together with the Olympus E-M5.
The newer sensor in the 5 number cameras are the newer much better unit than the older 12 Mpixel sensor which is also very good, but not up to the recent competition. Olympus announced to release a new 300mm f4 lens for sports and wildlife photography. This lens is like a 375mm lens on a DX or Aps-C cameras, together with the f4 aperture is an interesting option.

Best Leica cameras

Leica is a brand of super expensive cameras. Leica is like Rolls Royce in cars, very expensive and exclusive but not the best especially in electronics. Currently the Leica M Typ 240 camera is their best Full frame camera, but the sensor quality is still not on par with the best Sony and Nikon Full frame cameras. Leica also has medium format cameras. Leica also make a mirrorless camera for the price of the Canon 6d.

Best Samsung mirrorless cameras

The newest Samsung flagship camera is rumored in the near future called Samsung NX1. Samsung also makes better and better cameras. The Samsung Galaxy Nx is a newest, most expensive Samsung camera with an Android 4.2 operation system. The Samsung Nx30 has essentially the same 20.2 Megapixel sensor without Android. The sensor is not bad, but I would wait several generations to buy one.
